CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for AN ITINERANT SEMINAR
Beta-Local / San Juan, Puerto Rico August 2-19, 2016
Application Deadline: friday, June 3, 2016

The Itinerant Seminar is a seminar-on-foot for artists who are interested in aesthetics, art, images and language in relation to land, geography, built structures, industrial and military devastation, freedom of movement and migration. This year our route is along the western coast of Puerto Rico from the southwestern tip, Cabo Rojo, to the northwest, ending in Aguadilla. The seminar is organized by artists Anahita Hekmat, Michelle Nonó and Beatriz Santiago Muñoz. We are particularly interested in the ways in which abstract political and social concepts become materially and sensorially manifest, how we perceive them when using our entire sensorium, and how this interacts with the unconscious, forming and re-forming subjectivities. Most of the time we will be traveling on foot and sleeping outdoors. We will be walking through bat caves and post-industrial developments, open road, US detention facilities, mangrove, and beach. There is another specific task at hand to the seminar this year, it is utopian, impractical and immediate: to create an art pedagogy grounded in the material and imaginative possibilities of this territory could be.

The structure and method of the seminar demands communal work and solidarity, as we will be undertaking a collective task: cooking together, sleeping outdoors and inevitably running into problems. A willingness to embrace the unexpected and improvise on your feet is essential. It will be hot and humid.

Anahita Hekmat is a nomad new media artist. She uses new technologies as an imaging apparatus in order to re-create specific environments, and to interpret human interactions with them through time. Her main body of work questions contemporary constructions of emplacement and displacement.

Michelle Nonó, lives in a small plot of land in San Antón, an industrial area in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Over the past 2 years she has turned her attention to poultry farming as a food resource. Her interests lie in emancipatory pedagogy, political theater, local food production, and the cultivation of neighborhood relations in the context the island-colony.

Beatriz Santiago Muñoz is an artist who works primarily with film and video. Her work emerges out of long observation processes in which the camera operates as a social object as well as an instrument mediating aesthetic thought. Some her recent work deal with caribbean speculative fictions and post-military land. She is also co-founder of Beta-Local, and directs Sessions.

CONVOCATORIA ABIERTA: SEMINARIO ITINERANTE
Beta-Local / San Juan, Puerto Rico Agosto 2-19, 2016
