Nuevo Trato

New Deal

New Deal is a project that proposes a revision to the PRRA (Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration) federal program from an artistic perspective. The artist will research this history and produce drawings, models and sculptural works, as well as ephemeral actions or more experimental interventions in public spaces. The title refers to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s program, created in 1932, which included the PRRA initiative, taking this historical marker as a departure point. Ada Bobonis is an established artist, with a long career working with sculpture, photography and installation.

Awilda Sterling

Establishing workshop in preparation for a retrospective exhibition

The project consists of establishing an artist workshop in a house that belonged to the artist’s parents for 52 years as part of preparing for a career retrospective. The house is located in a working class neighborhood in Carolina and was once an active cultural center that generated projects intrinsically related to AfroCaribbean culture. Activating the structure as an artist workshop will revive traditions previously developed in this place as well as hosting a working space for a contemporary artistic practice engaged with the surrounding community. Awilda Sterling is a veteran performance artist and experimental dancer with a background in abstract painting.

Platform for Other Media: Amplification / Distortion (Ceramic and Metal Series)

The project proposes the development of a series of objects/instruments that provide a platform or surface to explore sound and its relationship with the voice and the body. Through the objects I will explore concepts related to the body / sound / matter and the possibility of inhabiting a surface that amplifies the voice and sound wave vibrations. The project explores sound as matter, its qualities and its possibilities of amplification, distortion and absorption. The shapes of the objects/acoustic instruments allude to the landscape and the architectural structure, as an organic, topographic and sonorous  form. Carola Cintrón Moscoso is a midcareer artist and educator working mostly in new media. She is also one of the founders and directors of independent art space Diagonal.

José López Serra

Hidrante

Hidrante

Hidrante is an independent art space, oriented towards exhibitions and community use and directed mainly by José López Serra, an emerging artist and curator. Since 2015, Hidrante has produced over 25 exhibitions, with a program directed towards individual and curated projects. The program maintains an active interest in fostering multimedia experimentation, presenting annually exhibitions that integrate performance, video art, photography, and installation. The space serves as a platform for first solo exhibitions and projects organized by artists. Hidrante also maintains a collaboration with Casa Fantasmes, an independent music studio and rehearsal space that shares the two-story house, and thrives on the intersection between contemporary art and independent music. The production grant will be used to support Hidrante in two ways: physical infrastructure of the space and future programming.

Asylum Banisters

Ramón Berríos is an established sculptor and educator, who has been collecting banisters made from the native Ausubo wood, an incredibly strong material favoured by the Spanish colonizers for construction. At least 80 are being discarded for restorations in the Old Insane Asylum of Old San Juan. With these banisters and other beams collected throughout the years, the artist will create a sculptural space that encompasses the floor and walls. With this grant, he will create a sculptural space where the center will be a sculpture of a dynamic nature made of banisters and other parts made from Ausubo. It will be a large format piece of pure wood, always appealing to the curve, and not to the straight line, “crazy in terms of shape”. On the walls, due to the intrinsic character of the banister with the architectural and historical space of the Asylum, it seems pertinent to collect photographic images of the Asylum from its initial construction in 1886 to the present.

The video folders of 2010 and 2011

The proposed project entails a detailed investigation of the videographic material taken by the Center for the Compilation, Analysis and Dissemination of Criminal Intelligence (CRADIC) of the Puerto Rico Police Department during the historic student strikes of 2010 and 2011 at the University of Puerto Rico as part of the research and development for a feature documentary currently in development on the aforementioned strikes. The material was obtained through a legal process and will be edited into a short film project that narrates part of the strike process through the gaze of the police. Ricardo Olivero Lora is a mid-career filmmaker and independent journalist who was the founder of a pirate radio station during the strike.

Bravata: encuesta a domicilio

Bravata: Home Survey

Bravata: home survey is a dramatized research project. It consists of visiting the homes of people who live on the coasts with the purpose of dealing with issues of labor survival in times of extreme uncertainty and, at the same time, combine it with a reflection on coasts, erosion, salt and surges (bravata, as it is called in certain parts of the island). The “survey” will be a device to structure the visits and conversations. A text will be developed that oscillates between the real and the action, testing forms of improvisation. The process will be documented on video looking for a home movie aesthetic. Teresa Hernández is an established performance and experimental theater-movement artist.
